Diablo - Silver Horizon

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

Hello Diablo,

I’m glad that you found the time to do this interview with our magazine. Your new album Silver Horizon is the sixth studio album, and the fans had to wait seven years for its release. First of all I therefore would like to know, why did it take so long to release this album?

Diablo / Rainer:

Hi, my pleasure really.
Well, me and Marko, for example, grow the next Diablo generation, ha ha! Marko went through quite a painful process when building a new house and I had also some setbacks in my personal life. But now those things are behind me for good.

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

Since at least your albums Mimic 47 and Icarus went down a bomb also in Germany. What can the fans expect on the album Silver Horizon, and in which way did you proceed during the production of this album?

Diablo / Rainer:

Hmm… Silver Horizon is by far our strongest album for sure.  The album is a collection on very strong compositions which are supposed to be played in the exact order that they appear on the album. To enable it we had to compose and write lyrics starting at the opening title of this journey (‚The Call‘). Of course we had a collection of riffs for the album existing already but the very first thing to do was to place those in the right order. From the original plan we rejected only one demo and it was replaced by Savage.

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

In my opinion the ten new songs on Silver Horizon are the best ones from you so far. How much did your experiences but also the long break influence the production?

Diablo / Rainer:

Thanks! You’re not the only one with that opinion. I did not worry about production at all cos‘ this kind on metal is timeless. I had, for example, the opportunity to write down and use all my ideas that I had in my mind for the sci-fi album. Including the riffs, ha! This was also the first time when Marko had the chance to think about the compositions and arrangements and experiment with the musical themes as long as he wanted to get it absolutely satisfying.

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

How did you spend the time in the studio? Did you only have some rough material, or was everything already finished up to the last detail?

Diablo / Rainer:

Every song was 99% finished when we entered the studio. So in the studio it was only a matter of nailing the perfect takes to the hard disc. Vocal arrangements were the only issue in which we had some conversation with Marko. He brought in some really good ideas to get the best out of me again.
Time For Metal / Rene W.:

Why did you choose the album name Silver Horizon? Was it a gut decision or is there any meaning behind it?

Diablo / Rainer:

The title just came to my mind years ago when I was listening the demo of that song. So it’s kind of a ‚gut decision‘ but maybe better description would be ‚out of the blue‘. At first I did not even know exactly what that title could be or what it means. I saw it as some kind of ‚aura of yearning‘ but when I started to write lyrics more seriously I realised that Silver Horizon  is the stage where the actors play their roles in this game of life.

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

Not to forget the artwork of the cover, which is at the same time inviting and mysterious. Is there any message to the listener behind it, and who was the artist of this cover?

Diablo / Rainer:

Miikka Tikka was the guy behind the artwork. He is a friend of ours and we had the honour to work with that kind of visionary person again. Over the years I upgraded my ideas with him and here is the result.  I see it as a collision between mystery of Genesis and some sort of ancient stealth technique.

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

After the release of an album normally a tour is scheduled. Can you tell anything about your plans in this direction, and will there possibly be also some shows in Germany?

Diablo / Rainer:

Hopefully! We’re looking after some decent agency to take over the Central European scenery. Meantime we’re touring in Finland cos‘ we have more than plenty to do over here. Seven years of waiting and die hard local fans, you’ll figure it out, ha ha!

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

Now the time after the release of one album is also the time before the release of the next album. Do we have to wait again such a long time to listen to new Diablo songs, or do you think, the release of the next album will shortly take place?

Diablo / Rainer:

Hopefully not! But we need to say that we would prefer first to tour with Silver Horizon as much as possible before releasing something new. I had some ideas for the future as well as Marko but let’s now enjoy this comeback of ours.

Time For Metal / Rene W.:

Thank you very much for this interview. I wish you all the best for the future. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans and the readers of Time for Metal?

Diablo / Rainer:

Thank you and vice versa. I would like to quote legendary Chuck Schuldiner and just say ‚keep the metal faith alive‘.
