Die britische Progressive-Death-Metal-Band Cryptic Shift veröffentlichen ihr Album Overspace & Supertime am 27. Februar über Metal Blade Records.
Leeds ist zwar nicht gerade für seine außerirdischen Aktivitäten bekannt, doch 2015 erlebte die Stadt eine ganz besondere Begegnung: Sänger und Gitarrist Alexander Bradley und Schlagzeuger Ryan Sheperson beschlossen, ein Projekt zu realisieren, das ihre gemeinsame Leidenschaft für Science-Fiction und Heavy Metal vereint. Cryptic Shift entstand als Crossover zwischen technischem Thrash/Death Metal und Science-Fiction. Die beiden Musiker machten sich auf, ihren Einfluss in Großbritannien zu verbreiten und tourten bald um die ganze Welt.
2020 veröffentlichten Cryptic Shift ihr Debütalbum Visits From Enceladus. Das Album verhalf der Band zu internationalem Ruhm und wurde von der Kritik für seine experimentellen, progressiven Technical-Death-Thrash-Kompositionen gefeiert – eine abgedrehte Form des Extreme Metal, die schlicht als „Phenomenal Technological Astrodeath“ bezeichnet wird.
Das 2026er Album Overspace & Supertime führt die konzeptionellen und musikalischen Themen ihres Debüts fort und setzt neue Maßstäbe für technisches Thrash/Death Metal. Es greift Einflüsse progressiver Musik auf und verbindet sie harmonisch mit ihrem fantastischen Storytelling.

Bradley kommentiert die neue Single Hexagonal Eyes (Diverity Trepaphyphasyzm): „The track demonstrates a vicious proficiency never before seen in death and thrash metal: A relentless flow of smart compositional ideas seize your attention in a black hole grip, across our most extreme material yet. „I was inspired by an image from 40 Days In The Desert by the legendary Moebius„, erklärtBradley. „The tall, sombre, cloaked figures were a fitting reference for the occurrence of our main character The Recaller as she finally encounters The Alien Sorceress. Jesse Jacobi is the one behind the phenomenal painting, and he was always the only one who’s style I could imagine it in. I did a lot of research into cloud formations for the lyrics and wanted them featured as the backdrop of the cover art with justice to their splendour. Furthermore, keen eyes will notice the composition rhymes with that of Visitations From Enceladus. Even though both characters are different entities, their paths are severely intertwined.“
