Die schwedischen Heavy-Metal-Titanen RAM veröffentlichen am 9. Oktober ihr neues Album Against über Metal Blade Records.
Es sind fast sieben Jahre vergangen seit The Throne Within, einem Album, das von spirituellen und metaphysischen Themen geprägt war. Mit Against schlagen RAM einen bodenständigeren Weg ein und konzentrieren sich auf die Erfahrung, über vernünftige Grenzen hinaus getrieben zu werden und sich der Unterordnung zu verweigern. Das Album fängt jenen Moment des Widerstands ein – „jenes Feuer des Aufbegehrens, das letztlich den Titel und die Botschaft definiert“, wie die Band gemeinsam erklärt.
Als Vorgeschmack auf die Veröffentlichung präsentieren RAM die erste Single des Albums, Ghost Emperor, samt dazugehörigem Video.
Carlquist kommentiert: „This is the opener of the album, a straightforward classic heavy metal song and pure RAM. Lyrically, it deals with how our power structures exist to conceal the true rulers, the ones we will never see or know, pulling the strings behind the curtain and controlling us all.“

Das RAM-Album Against erscheint auf CD und digital sowie auf Vinyl in den folgenden Farbvarianten:

Für die Produktion arbeitete RAM erneut mit dem langjährigen Partner Johan Reiven zusammen, der bereits an Lightbringer (2009) mitgewirkt hatte. Da sie über kein eigenes Studio mehr verfügten – die Black Path Studios waren verkauft worden –, nahm die Band im Studio Recordia im schwedischen Varberg auf. „At first, I wasn’t really comfortable not being in my own domain“, gesteht Sänger Oscar Carlquist. „But Johan is a far better sound tech than me and he did a wonderful job. We recorded the solos in a cool new way, as we set up two amps, one wet with a lot of effects and one dry with no effects. They were both mic’d up separately and they played into the enormous recording room in Recordia that is 150 square meters, where we placed two room mics (left and right).“ Dieser Ansatz sorgte für einen satten, organischen Klang, der den Gesamtcharakter des Albums unterstrich.
Musikalisch setzen beide Gitarristen weiterhin bevorzugt auf Steg-Tonabnehmer, um einen scharfen und aggressiven Ton zu bewahren. Das für Against verwendete Equipment spiegelt einen klassischen Ansatz wider und trägt zu einem Sound bei, der sowohl zeitlos als auch direkt wirkt. Klanglich wurde Against als Rückkehr zu klassischen Aufnahmephilosophien konzipiert. Inspiriert von den frühen Werken von Dio, MSG und Sweet, war das Ziel ein ehrlicher, ungeschönter Sound. Was man hört, ist das, was man bekommt! In einer Musiklandschaft, die zunehmend in unzählige Subgenres zersplittert ist, positioniert sich die Band bewusst außerhalb jeglicher Schubladen. Der Titel Against unterstreicht zudem die langjährige Identität der Band als Nonkonformisten, die Heavy Metal als eine Form der klanglichen Rebellion begreifen.
„We do not give a fuck about all these new strange subgenres popping up. We try to play heavy metal in its purest form. We try to hang on to the center of that energy, and we are completely uninterested in 99% of the metal scene“, betont Carlquist.
